Annual Rhine cruise for vulnerable and lonely elderly people

The A-wareness Foundation has contributed to a special initiative organised by the municipality of De Fryske Marren. They organise an annual boat trip: The Rhine Cruise.

During this trip, around 50 guests who are no longer able to go on holiday independently were given the chance to get away from it all for a while.

These are vulnerable and lonely elderly people, often accompanied by their partner and/or carer. On board the holiday ship Prins Willem-Alexander (river cruise ship), they were fully looked after by a dedicated team of nurses, carers, a doctor and volunteers.

The trip not only offers the guests a valuable holiday, but also gives informal carers the chance to catch their breath and enjoy themselves.
